The ranking uses Ofsted overall effectiveness as the primary sort criterion:

  1. Ofsted overall effectiveness grade — Outstanding (grade 1) ranks above Good (grade 2), which ranks above Requires Improvement (grade 3), which ranks above Inadequate (grade 4). Schools with no published Ofsted outcome are excluded.
  2. School name (A–Z) — alphabetical within the same Ofsted grade. This is a stable tiebreaker only and does not indicate any qualitative difference.

The source data is the Ofsted Management Information file published by the Department for Education. Both GIAS and Ofsted data are updated after each inspection cycle; the currency of this page reflects the most recent ETL load.

Selective grammar schools and academies are included alongside comprehensives where they fall in the phase range and are state-funded. Independent fee-paying schools are excluded.
