Surrey Stations With the Most on the Doorstep

Which Surrey stations sit inside a real town centre and which sit in a field? We counted every everyday amenity within 1km of all 84 Surrey rail stations.

Home-Checker Team

“Walking distance to the station” does a lot of work on property listings. What it rarely says is what else is within walking distance once you get there. A Surrey station can sit at the centre of a town with fifteen food shops and a library inside a ten-minute walk, or it can sit on a lane with a single pub and nothing else for two miles.

That difference decides whether you can live without a second car, whether the evening commute ends with a shop or a drive, and — over a long ownership — how much of daily life happens on foot.

We took every active rail station in the Surrey NaPTAN administrative area, computed a single point for each from its platform coordinates, and counted the everyday amenities within a 1 km radius using PostGIS.

Snapshot: NaPTAN public-transport access nodes (Department for Transport), active rail stops in the Surrey administrative area, as loaded into the Home-Checker database on 1 September 2026. Amenities from OpenStreetMap as loaded on 27 April 2026. Amenity basket: supermarket, convenience store, pharmacy, post office, library, leisure centre, gym, café, restaurant, pub, park, playground and hospital. Distance measured as a 1 km radius from the station centroid using PostGIS ST_DWithin on geography points. 84 stations assessed. Hospitals are counted in the total but are not broken out as a column, so the columns do not always sum to it.

Five Surrey stations have no recorded everyday amenity within a kilometre at all. These are not failures — Wanborough and Ockley are rural halts serving a scattered catchment, and a house near them is being bought for the quiet and the field views, not for the high street. But a buyer who reads “0.4 miles to the station” and pictures a town centre is picturing the wrong thing.

Four things the numbers actually show

Guildford has two stations serving one town centre. Guildford and London Road sit roughly a kilometre apart, so their 1 km circles overlap heavily and both capture the same town-centre core. Read them as one very well-served area rather than two independent ones.

Dorking has three stations, and the best-served is not the main one. Dorking West scores 78 and Dorking Deepdene 54, while Dorking itself scores 36 and falls outside the table. That is geography, not service quality: Dorking West sits closer to the High Street, while Dorking station is set further out to the north. A buyer optimising for walkability picks the wrong station if they go by name alone.

Food shops and hospitality do not move together. Camberley records 31 cafés, pubs and restaurants but only 3 food shops within the kilometre. Staines records 15 food shops and 48 hospitality venues. Egham and Addlestone record 10 food shops each against 22 hospitality venues. If your test is “can I buy a week’s groceries on foot”, the hospitality column is noise.

The tail is long and it is rural. Across all 84 Surrey stations the basket totals 2,036 amenities, and the seventeen in the table above account for 1,139 of them — 56% of the county’s total, from 20% of its stations. The median Surrey station has 14 everyday amenities within a kilometre, against Guildford’s 128. Most Surrey stations sit in village or edge-of-town settings where the nearest shop is a drive.

What this is and is not

It is a count, not a walkability score. We are not producing a rating. The 1 km radius is a straight-line circle, and a real walk has to deal with rivers, dual carriageways and railway lines. A station 900 metres from a supermarket on the far side of the A3 is not a nine-minute walk.

The amenity data is OpenStreetMap. It is good, and it is community-maintained, which means coverage is denser in busy areas and can lag new openings and closures. A very low count in a genuinely rural area is likely to be accurate; a low count in a built-up area is worth verifying before you rely on it.

Quantity is not quality. Ninety-six hospitality venues within a kilometre of Guildford station is a statement about a busy town centre. Whether you want to live in a busy town centre is a separate question — and one that also touches noise, air quality and the property-type mix, since station-adjacent Surrey outcodes skew heavily towards flats.

This measures the station, not your house. The reason to care about a station’s surroundings is that it is where your commute begins and ends, not where you live. The amenities within a kilometre of the property itself are the ones you will use.

Reading it alongside the commute

Amenity density near a station correlates fairly closely with price, because it correlates with town-centre location. The Surrey towns at the top of this table are the ones that appear in our commuter rankings — see Surrey commuter towns under £600k and the towns for London commuters under £600k. The stations at the bottom sit in the parts of the county covered by our work on rural broadband in Surrey villages, where the trade-off is space and quiet against connectivity and convenience.

For how the amenity data is assembled and what is in each report, see the amenities methodology page and the Surrey area data.

What a report gives you for a specific address

Home-Checker’s amenities section lists the nearest supermarket, GP surgery, hospital, pharmacy, petrol station, café and train station to an address with the distance to each, alongside Ofcom broadband coverage for the postcode. GP surgeries are surfaced as points of interest with a name and a distance — a location, not a practice record.

Amenity locations are sourced from OpenStreetMap under the Open Database Licence and reflect the state of the map at the time of import. Straight-line distances do not account for the actual walking route. Always check the specific address before you rely on these figures.
