Surrey towns for fast broadband and rural quiet

Remote workers relocating from London often want the same thing: gigabit-capable broadband without giving up a quieter residential environment. Surrey's fibre rollout has reached several areas beyond the M25 commuter belt — including some of its less urbanised towns and larger villages. This page lists the Surrey outcodes where at least half of premises have gigabit-capable broadband available, ranked by coverage level.

“Rural quiet” is a subjective quality. The ranking uses Surrey-wide low crime as a broad proxy for residential character — it does not mean rural in the ONS Rural Urban Classification sense. Some of the highest-gigabit outcodes in Surrey are suburban rather than rural. For a specific postcode, an Area Report shows street-level crime, proximity to amenities, and the full broadband picture.

Surrey as a whole records 59.0 offences per 1,000 residents, one of the lower county rates in England — which is part of the appeal for remote workers relocating from higher-density areas.

How we ranked this

The ranking uses two criteria:

  1. Gigabit-capable availability ≥ 50% (primary filter and sort) — the percentage of premises in the outcode where a gigabit-capable connection is operator-reported as available to Ofcom. Outcodes below 50% are excluded. Higher coverage ranks first. Data source: Ofcom Connected Nations, Open Government Licence v3.0.
  2. Ultrafast availability (tiebreaker) — percentage of premises where 300 Mbit/s+ is available, used to separate outcodes with the same gigabit figure.

Not yet wired — ONS Rural Urban Classification: the ONS Rural Urban Classification (2011 or 2021 vintage) would allow filtering to genuinely rural or semi-rural postcodes. This is not currently available as a per-outcode live data feed in this system. Some outcodes in this ranking are suburban rather than rural.

Coverage does not equal availability at every property. Even within a high-scoring outcode, individual addresses may not have access to the best networks. An address-level check via the relevant network operator's postcode checker is the definitive test.
